Sword or “Assault Weapon”

An attempt to reconcile our current world situation with obedience to scripture
This was a study to determine an appropriate and biblical Christian response to gun control efforts by the government of the United States President.
Summary
  • Our first responsibility is to obey the Lord.
  • We should obey all legal laws that conform to the Constitution of the United States of America.
  • If we choose to resist conforming to any illegal laws, we need to be prepared to pay the price.
  • The bottom line is that the Lord will protect His believing followers as long as they conform to His rules.
  • Even if the government exacts the ultimate price the Lord will receive us to His bosom.

Scriptures which seem to apply
Matthew 10:31-39 — Jesus came to bring a sword
  • Jesus said He came not to bring peace, but a sword.
  • Though one loses their life, for Jesus’ sake they will find it.
  • IMHO this is our fallback position. God’s got our back!

Luke 22:36-40 — Buy a sword if you don’t have one
  • Jesus said for us to buy a sword if you don’t have one.
  • IMHO we should arm ourselves sufficiently to protect ourselves, family, friends and the helpless.

Matthew 26:47-52 — There is a right time to use a sword
  • When it became time for his followers to use a sword, Jesus reminded them that drawing a sword will result in death by another’s sword.
  • IMHO I agree, but in the end, God still has our back.

Romans 8:35-39 — Nothing can separate us from God’s love
  • Paul reminded believers that neither trouble, hardship, persecution nor famine, nakedness, danger or sword would not separate believers from the love of Christ.
  • Paul recorded his assurance that nothing (death or life, angels or demons, the present or future, or any powers could separate believers from the love of God.
  • IMHO this is how the Lord has our back.

Romans 13:1-5 —  We must submit to those laws that are legal
  • Troubling though it is, Paul asserts that believers must submit to authorities because they are established by God for the good of believers and to rebel against the authorities is to rebel against God.
  • This submission is not just to avoid punishment, but should be done out of a good conscience.
  • IMHO we should obey as long as the authorities are issuing legal rules and laws. As long as they are themselves violating the Constitution, we are free to disobey them, but never the Lord.

Nehemiah 4:9-15 — The Jews protected themselves while rebuilding the temple
  • Nehemiah faced a hostile surrounding world, so he posted guards over the work of rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem.
  • Nehemiah exhorted the leaders to fight for the people— they remembered that God was great and awesome.
  • IMHO there is a need and the right to defend and protect ourselves.

2 Chronicles 20:1-30 — God’s protection for Israel under Jehoshaphat
  • Though Jehoshaphat had a standing army of 1,160,000 warriors, he still called a fast & inquired of the Lord.
  • Jehoshaphat prayed and asserted his trust that the Lord would deliver Judah and Benjamin.
  • God assured Jehoshaphat that He would prevail and told them that the battle was not theirs but His.
  • Jehoshaphat sent the choir out ahead of the army praising God.
  • God set ambushes against the attackers and they killed one another off, leaving only the plunder to be retrieved by Jehoshaphat’s troops.
  • IMHO Jehoshaphat got it right. Good example to follow.

2 Chronicles 7:11-16 — Importance of Solomon’s Temple
  • The Lord told Solomon to exhort the people to humble themselves at the temple, seek God’s face, and turn from their wicked ways and then He would forgive them and heal their land.
  • IMHO while the temple is not there right now (but will be during the end times), the principle is transferable.

James 4:7-10 — First submit to God
  • Submit to God.
  • Resist the devil.
  • Come near to God and He will come near to us.
  • IMHO we need say no more; just do it.

Psalm 44:1-8 — Don’t trust solely in your weaponry
  • God is the one who conquers our enemies.
  • Don’t trust in your weapons to bring you victory.
  • IMHO good point. See 2 Cor. 10:4-5

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 — Our true weapons are more powerful than the world’s
  • We are at war and must be prepared to fight.
  • Our true weapons are not the ones the world is aware of.
  • The weapons we use are more powerful than those of the world.
  • IMHO we should keep this in mind as we buy our guns, knives.

Ephesians 6:10-18 — We are participants in a spiritual war
We are at war, so
  • Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.
  • For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
  • Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

Don the:
  • Belt of truth
  • Breastplate of righteousness
  • Footwear of peace
  • Shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one
  • Helmet of salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit
  • Spiritual prayer
Note
IMHO = In my humble opinion
